Routine Exams and Hygiene
The dentist at Polaris Dentistry of Sachse, Shilpa Dhawan, DMD, recommends two routine dental exams per year for most patients. Each exam includes necessary X-rays, check-up/cavity check, and cleaning that’s right for you.
Dr. Dhawan also recommends brushing your teeth at least twice per day and flossing daily. This easy routine will help prevent tooth decay, periodontal disease, and other oral health issues.
Mouthguards
Custom mouthguards are sometimes used to prevent teeth grinding, which causes excessive wear on your teeth, and jaw clenching, which can cause Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain/discomfort.
If you have been told that you grind your teeth in your sleep, or if you suffer from chronic headaches or jaw pain, schedule a routine exam today. Make sure you ask about a custom mouthguard to help relieve your pain.
Oral Cancer Screenings
If deemed necessary, we perform oral cancer screenings using the latest technology. These screenings play a crucial role in the early detection of certain cancers. In addition, routine visits and x-rays help us identify potential malignancies.
Periodontal Therapy
Healthy gums are just as crucial as strong teeth, and again, the best way to keep your gums healthy is with proper hygiene and routine exams.
If you have gum disease, periodontal therapy is a term we use to describe a variety of treatments you may need to undergo. These treatments are essential for restoring health to your teeth and gums and preventing tooth loss. There are surgical and non-surgical treatments.
We treat each case individually, working with the patient to develop a treatment plan. The least invasive procedures are recommended when possible.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride, a naturally-occurring mineral, helps rebuild tooth enamel and reverse early signs of tooth decay. Your body absorbs fluoride in two ways: systemically and topically.
We recommend dental care products with fluoride and, if necessary, fluoride treatments applied professionally. Fluoride treatments help repair weakened tooth enamel by replenishing lost calcium and phosphate, minerals that also make your teeth more resistant to decay.
Healthy Nutrition for Healthy Teeth
In addition to good oral hygiene, minor changes to your diet can help maintain a healthy smile. After meals, drinking a glass of water can wash away sugars. If you drink or eat something acidic, like sodas or candies, waiting 30 minutes before brushing allows your saliva time to neutralize acids and protect your teeth. Last but not least, eating good, healthy food goes a long way toward maintaining healthy teeth and gums. We found some excellent guidance for proper nutrition for healthy teeth on Eatright.org.
- Calcium-rich foods, such as low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurt and cheese, and fortified soymilk help promote strong teeth and bones. Other sources of calcium include tofu (made with calcium sulfate), canned salmon, almonds, and some dark green leafy vegetables.
- Phosphorus, a mineral found in eggs, fish, lean meat, dairy, nuts, and beans, is good for strong teeth.
- Vitamin C promotes gum health, so eat plenty of sources, including citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, potatoes, and spinach.
